Intro to Improv Classes

What You'll Learn
Start with the fundamentals of improv and build up to advanced scene work. This program guides you step-by-step through core concepts like listening, scene building and character development. No experience required.

Advanced Improv Classes

What You'll Learn
Designed for experienced improvisers, this program dives into advanced techniques such as identifying the game of the scene and exploring longform formats like The Harold. ​ 
 

Sketch Comedy
Classes

What You'll Learn
Discover the art of writing and performing comedy for the stage. You'll learn the fundamentals of sketch structure, character creation and comedic timing, then craft your own original sketches. 

Workshops
and Intensives

What You'll Learn
These rotating sessions feature guest artists and focused deep dives into specific aspects of improv and performance. Topics range from physical comedy and performance to character work and beyond.

You’ll have regular opportunities to perform in front of an audience in a supportive showcase format. Advanced students may have the opportunity to audition for performance opportunities with Garden City.

Q. I've never done improv before. Can I really do this?

Everyone starts somewhere! Improv 101 is designed for complete beginners. You'll be surprised how quickly you develop skills and confidence.

Q. Is improv training just for aspiring comedians and actors? 

Not at all! Our students include teachers, healthcare workers, business professionals, students, and retirees. Improv skills benefit everyone.

Q. How is this different from community theatre improv? 

Garden City instructors are industry professionals that apply proven methods and techniques to every class. You're learning the same skills that launched major comedy careers at the Second City, SCTV and Saturday Night Live.

Q. What if I'm too shy or introverted? 

Don’t worry! Many of our most successful students started out that way. We offer a supportive environment and "Yes, And" philosophy to help everyone find their voice.

Q. Do I need to be funny? 

 Improv teaches you to find the funny in everyday situations. You don't need to come in with jokes—you'll discover humour through the work.
